Herrigoia Maceración Carbonica is a fruit-forward, modern take on Rioja, away from the wood-heavy rustic examples.

Couple Gorka and Itxaso took over their respective family vineyards in Rioja Alavesa to produce small scale family wines in a rather corporate, name-dropping wine region. They tend 9hectares of vines organically and maintain traditional methods with a definitive contemporary take.

Rioja 'Herrigoia' 2019 - El Mozo

  • Whole bunches of hand harvested organic grapes go into traditional large concrete open top tanks called 'lake', similar to port's lagares, where carbonic maceration and fermentation happen. Malolactic fermentation as well, bottled with a touch of SO2.
